• Children need to know what is involved in reaching their career goal. Help your child understand that becoming a veterinarian requires much more than loving animals.
• Don't pressure your child to make a career decision before they are ready. The younger the child, the greater the need to explore careers in many different areas.
• Interests are the number one criteria when choosing a career. Encourage your child concentrate on interest areas and then plan how to obtain the skills necessary to reach a goal.
• Self-concept plays an important role in career decision-making. Help your child identify the good things you see in him/her and your hopes for his/her future.
• As adults we know that our work impacts many roles – parent, spouse, homemaker, citizen, etc. Share this with your child. As children get older, they begin to develop "work values" which ultimately determine satisfaction in work.
• Today training or education after high school is almost essential. There are at least nine different pathways to take ranging from apprenticeships to four-year degrees. Encourage your child to pursue the pathway that is best for them and their goals.
